Austin Wintory Pathless Challenge

Austin Wintory Pathless Challenge

Watch Now

In November 2020, renowned composer Austin Wintory issued a challenge after the release of his most recent project, The Pathless.

Austin challenged people to take an original sample of his, in this case a 90 second recording of a Nyckelharpa (A traditional Swedish string instrument) and manipulate the recording into something new. There were no rules at all, he encouraged entrants to be bold and experimental.

Mikey created three pieces in response to this challenge. You can view two of them here, the third is

on Mikey's YouTube channel.

Mikey was later selected by Austin as a winner and was invited to collaborate with him on the game Aliens: Fireteam Elite.

A reference from Austin Wintory:

"Mikey is a young, talented composer who stepped up to the plate for a contest I was hosting and attacked with both professional chops/technique, but also the courage to be very different. His bold approach caught my eye and I was all too happy to name him one of the winners. The collaboration that followed (in which he did some creative musical sound design-type work for the game ALIENS FIRETEAM ELITE) was easy and bore wonderful results. He's terrific!"

Broken up into four distinct sections, the music transitions depending on how much time is left on the timer, becoming increasingly tense and stressful as play progresses!

Click here to play the game! The Open Sky was made for the Global Game Jam 2020. The theme for the jam was 'repair'. Here we see our hero repairing the night sky after breaks apart. I made six different versions of the same piece of music for this game. The first version is broken, missing most of the instruments and out of tune. As you progress through the game, the music gradually repairs itself until you hear the full and final version towards the end of the game.
